TENSILE STRUCTURE - SPRING 01 -

  • Haziran 04, 2019
  • by

The term of “Structure” implies anything constructed or built from interrelated parts that are fixed in location. It represents a definite pattern of organization of parts as dominated by the general character of the whole. Structure and architecture are two components in shaping the organization of a building and consequently forming the architectural and urban space.
The purpose of this assignment is to make understand the basic principles of a structure through the analysis of “Tensile Structural Systems”.
The term of Tensile Structure is associated with the load-bearing capacity of structures (i.e. buildings) that is achieved through tension stress using cables, fabrics or foils. Although it may be in different forms, it has generally two constructional processes: the saddle and the cone, or combination of them.
In this assignment, you are going to design tensile structure of yours based on the basic principles of Tensile Structural System located in Gülbahçe Square, Gülbahçe, Urla.
To create your own composition, you first need to understand the principles of tensile structures through the analyses of existing structures and model making. After then, you will start working on your composition with a proper application to the site.
The composition of your structure will cover at least half of the Gülbahçe Square, but will not exceed 2/3 of it. It will provide a shading environment to about 20 people who are standing underneath it for a specific reason that you will decide and describe. Your structure needs to represent the possibility and space characteristic of the nearby environment as well as represent its architectural durability.
Working Steps:
1.Understand the structural logic of tensile structure by analyzing and modeling assigned and researched examples (group work of 2)
2.Understand the physical characteristics of the site by producing a class model of the site (class work)
3.Familiarize with the physical characteristics of the site (group work of 2)
4.Produce a shade structure by using the principles of tensile sturctural system (individual)
5.Present the structure you designed by a 3D model and 2D drawings (individual)

Studio Work-1a: Structural Systems
Understanding Tensile Structures (Group work)
As the first step of this exercise, you will explore the structural logic of tensile systemsby analyzing two examples. As a group of 2, you will analyze 2 structures assigned to you and represent your analyses by producing an info poster on a 50*70 cm cardboard.
After careful research that is retrieved from the internet, each group will produce an info poster that should introduce and represent;
•The Name
•The Architect/Designer/Engineer etc.
•Function of the structure
•Form and volume (height) of the structure
•Spatial organization of the structure (i.e. linear form, central form, organic form etc.)
•Structure-Human scale relationship
•Components of the structure (the elements) and relationships of each components with one another
•By showing how tensile stress works
•By showing how compression stress works.
Working Step:
1.Understand the structural logic of tensile structure by analyzing the examples
2.Present your analyses as an info poster (50*70cm)
Goals to Achieve:
Understanding the context  of tensile structure
Understanding structural system
Understanding part-whole relationship
Understanding the physical space charecteristics of structure
Method:
2D representation technique
Depicting the organization system of examined structure
Sketches (Scale-free drawing)

Structural Systems
Understanding Tensile Structures (Group work)
As a second step of this exercise, as a group of 2, you will explore the structural logic of tensile systems by producing a 1/20 scale model suitable to human-scale which will depict the basic working principles of tensile systems.
While your model requires working on the principles of tensile structural system inspired from the examples listed in here, your model is also expected to be self-standing and resistant and to protect for about 8-10 people from the wind and rain.
The materials you will/may use are;
•Wooden sticks (4 mm)
•Strings
•Stockings (nude color), fishnet stockings, undershirt
Examples
•You may use the examples in Studio work-1a and show the basic principles of a membrane structure. However, while using Studiowork examples, you may need to focus on the the main working principle and model it.
•Other examples you may choose to produce
Working Step:
1. Understand the structural logic of tensile structure by modeling.
2. Present your group model in 1/20 scale suitable for human scale.
Goals to Achieve:
Understanding structural system
Understanding the context of tensile structure

Understanding and making representation

Tensile Structure on Gülbahçe Square
As the last step of this assignment, you are going to design a tensile structure of yours based on the basic principles of Tensile Structural System located in Gülbahçe Square, Gülbahçe, Urla.
Since your design proposal will locate on a certain place, you also need to experience and explore the site. This understanding will help you to design your design proposal suitable to its nearby environment. As a group of 2, this understanding will be represented on a 35*50 cm posteranalyzing of the site through photos, sketches (facade and perspectives), diagrammatic illustration indicating circulation patterns, vista points etc. (1/500 to 1/200 scale base map would be enough to use for showing the diagrammatic representation.)
In relation to the site, you are going to develop a  design proposal of tensile structure individually. Your structure will cover at least half of the Gülbahçe Square, but will not exceed 2/3 of it. It will provide a shading environment to about 20 people who are standing underneath it for a specific reason that you will decide and describe. Your structure needs to represent the possibility and space characteristic of the nearby environment as well as represent its architectural durability and will be on a 1/50 scale.
Additionally, you are going to produce a mass model of the Gülbahçe Square which will be a collaborative work of the class. The scale of this model will also be 1/50.
Working Steps:1.Understand the physical characteristics of the site by producing a class model of the site (1/20 scale) (class work)
2. Familiarize with the physical characteristics of the site and represent it on a 2D poster (the group of 2).
3. Produce a shade structure (individual).
4. Present the structure you designed by a 3D model and 2D drawings (individual).
Note: While on the site you will explore;
  • the physical characteristic of the site:
  • topography
  • vegetation (trees)
  • climate (temparature/ sun-shade / wind etc.)
  • the characteristic of built-up environment:
  • buildings (types, texture, dimensions (height and width) etc.
  • visual experience: vista points / veiws (pleasant / unpleasant)
  • audial experience: noisy vs. ttranquil places)
  • Activities: (sitting, chatting, gathering, walking etc.)
  • Circulation patterns:
  • vehicle circulation
  • pedestrian circulation
